IPIECA Marine Spill Group Meeting 14 – 16 April 2026

MV Solong and MV Stena Immaculate alission

This biannual event brings together representatives of the world’s major oil companies, IMO, major response organisations, science/research organisations and some, like UK and Ireland Spill Association that are doing work that is of interest to the Group.

The Association presented on its aspiration to form a Global Plastic Pollution Response Network and will now work with a small group of oil company and science members to see how this can be brought to reality.

The Group had a detailed presentation from those at the heart of the MV Solong and MV Stena Immaculate alission on the Noth Sea on 10 March 2025.  UK SOSREP, Ambipar and salvors gave a fascinating insight into decision making, risk assessment, knowledge gathering behind the major decisions related to this significant incident.

OSRL led a really good wildlife session explaining how teams globally may be deployed to incidents.

There were discussions on dispersant usage, development on SIMA assessment tool, how work is continuing on developing IPIECA guidance on alternative fuels.
