A production vessel offshore Nigeria appears to have been gutted in a fire that broke out overnight.

The FPSO Trinity Spirit is located as a fuel production, storage and offloading vessel. It has 22,000 barrels per day of capacity and the ability to store 2 million barrels.

At the time of the incident, it is not known how much product was onboard the vessel at the time of an explosion that occurred at 0100 this morning that was followed by a fire.

It is reported that 10 people have been killed and the fire continues.

The Trinity Spirit support production from an oil field designated as OML 108. However, in 2021 its output is reported by Government statistics as zero.

An issue that will cause complications for the response is that the vessel’s owners have been in financial difficulties for some time.
